Soroptimist International of Europe (Soroptimist International – SI) is a worldwide organisation for women from many professions, founded in 1921 in California, USA. The first club in Europe was founded in Paris in 1924. Today the organisation unites clubs in more than 120 countries. The name itself, from the Latin soror (sister) and optima (best), expresses its mission: the best for women.
Equality, development, peace, the defence of human rights and the improvement of the position of women in society are the organisation’s core aims.
These issues, challenges and goals laid the foundation for the establishment of the Soroptimist International Riga Club on 17 April 1999. SI Riga Club gives women from different professions the opportunity to exchange information and experience, address local and global issues, and work at national and international level.
